AppleCare+ for Mac: Cost, Coverage and Alternatives

AppleCare+ extended warranty for Mac
AppleCare+ provides extended protection for your Mac.

What is AppleCare+?

AppleCare+ is Apple's extended warranty and support program that extends your coverage beyond the standard one-year limited warranty. It provides additional hardware coverage, software support, and, most importantly, accidental damage protection that the standard warranty doesn't include.

Is the investment actually worth it? With over 20,000 Mac repairs since 2015, we know the most common types of damage and what they cost out of warranty. This guide looks at who AppleCare+ makes sense for – and what the alternatives are.

AppleCare+ Pricing

AppleCare+ prices vary by Mac model and are adjusted by Apple regularly. In Germany Apple sells AppleCare+ for Mac as a subscription, paid monthly or annually until you cancel – a one-time payment is not offered on apple.com/de (as of October 14, 2026). For current prices, see Apple directly:

Service Fees for Accidental Damage

What You'll Pay per Incident

  • Screen or external enclosure damage: €99
  • Other accidental damage (incl. liquid damage): €259
  • MacBook Neo: €59 for screen or enclosure damage, €179 for other accidental damage
  • No fee for manufacturing defects or battery service

These are Apple's service fees for the current Mac models, as of October 14, 2026; the same fee applies at Apple and at authorized service providers, and Apple notes that fees may be subject to VAT.

The Math: Is AppleCare+ Worth It?

Compare two scenarios for the same damage, e.g. a broken display plus a logicboard failure on a MacBook Pro 14":

With AppleCare+

You pay: the AppleCare+ subscription payments up to that point + €99 screen service fee + €259 other-damage service fee.

Without AppleCare+

You pay: the full out-of-warranty repair price, which depends on the model and the damage.

Break-even

For most Mac models, AppleCare+ can pay for itself with just one major repair: a single display replacement out of warranty can cost more than several years of AppleCare+ payments.

Pros of AppleCare+

✓ Financial Protection

Predictable repair costs with low service fees instead of shocking out-of-warranty prices.

✓ Peace of Mind

No hesitation about using your Mac in various environments or situations.

✓ Convenience

Service at Apple and at authorized service providers – by courier pickup or mail-in with a prepaid shipping kit; for desktop Macs Apple can also send a technician.

✓ Battery Coverage

Free battery replacement when capacity drops below 80%.

✓ Expert Support

Priority access to Apple's technical support team by chat or phone.

Cons of AppleCare+

✗ Ongoing Cost

A monthly or annual payment for as long as the subscription runs, more for the higher-end models.

✗ Service Fees

Still need to pay for each accidental damage claim.

✗ No Theft Coverage

AppleCare+ for Mac doesn't cover theft or loss.

✗ Not Transferable

A subscription linked to your Apple Account cannot be transferred to the new owner when you sell the Mac; according to Apple, only a plan paid for differently may be transferable, and even then only under certain conditions.

✗ May Go Unused

If you're careful, you might never need it.

Who Should Buy AppleCare+?

Definitely Consider If You:

  • Use your Mac professionally and can't afford downtime
  • Travel frequently with your MacBook
  • Have a history of accidental damage
  • Work in challenging environments
  • Own a high-end Mac model
  • Plan to keep your Mac well beyond the first warranty year
  • Want predictable repair costs

Maybe Skip If You:

  • Only use your Mac at home
  • Have a history of excellent device care
  • Upgrade frequently (every 1-2 years) – the subscription cannot be transferred to the buyer
  • Have other insurance that covers electronics
  • Own a lower-cost Mac model
  • Are comfortable with repair risks

AppleCare+ vs. Alternatives

Third-Party Warranties:

Device Insurance

Pros: Can cover accidental damage and sometimes theft

Cons: Deductibles, exclusions and the repair route vary by provider

Home Insurance

Pros: May already have it, may cover theft

Cons: Often a higher deductible, affects premiums, slow claims

Credit Card Coverage

Pros: Included with some premium cards, no separate contract

Cons: Usually limited to about 1 year, complex claims

Self-Insurance:

Setting aside the AppleCare+ cost in a savings account for potential repairs. Works if you have multiple devices and good luck, but one major repair can exceed years of "premiums."

Tips for Maximizing AppleCare+ Value

  1. You have 60 days from purchase to add AppleCare+
  2. Monthly payments are easier to budget and you can cancel anytime – paying annually is cheaper than twelve monthly payments
  3. Get your battery checked while the coverage runs – below 80% capacity Apple replaces it free of charge
  4. Keep all receipts and service records
  5. When selling your Mac, cancel the subscription – a plan linked to your Apple Account cannot be transferred to the buyer
  6. Read the terms carefully to understand coverage limits

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy AppleCare+ after 60 days?

No, you must purchase AppleCare+ within 60 days of buying your Mac. After this period, you cannot add coverage.

Does AppleCare+ cover water damage?

Yes, liquid damage is covered under accidental damage protection. You'll pay the €259 service fee for "other damage" (€179 for the MacBook Neo).

Can I cancel AppleCare+ and get a refund?

Yes, you can cancel at any time; coverage then ends immediately. According to Apple, you receive a refund for the unexpired portion of the coverage – the details depend on the AppleCare terms and conditions.

Is AppleCare+ worth it for Mac mini?

Less essential than for portables since desktop Macs face fewer risks. Consider it if you move it frequently or live in areas with power issues.

What does "coverage expired" mean?

The message in System Settings or Apple's coverage check only means the one-year manufacturer warranty (or an AppleCare+ plan) has ended. Statutory consumer rights toward the retailer can still apply for two years from purchase – and the device remains repairable either way: independent workshops work regardless of warranty status, and with us every repair starts with a free error analysis. More: No Apple support anymore? No problem.

What's the difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+?

AppleCare is Apple's umbrella term for the warranty and support every Mac comes with: a one-year limited warranty and 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare+ is the paid extension with accidental damage protection.
